My storyAt the end of my sophomore year, I volunteered at Hartford hospital once a week, eight hours a day, for six weeks. For the first four hours of my day, I worked in the nursing unit helping patients by getting them water, bed sheets, and toiletries. After lunch, I went to patient services where I discharged people from the hospital. My favorite part of the hospital experience was meeting new people and taking care of patients. I love talking to people because making connections and understanding people is something I take pride in. My involvement at the Hartford Hospital created an interest in using my schooling to understand other cultures and public health issues around the world. I plan on doing this by getting involved in clubs like UTD, which is an organization that focuses on racial issues on our campus, and the political discourse club where we talk about recent world problems in the news. I was brought up in a family that has always been involved in social justice issues. As a psychiatrist, my mom has demonstrated that it is important to foster a deeper understanding for people and the issues that impact them. I find her work ethic inspiring. Just like my mother, I want to work on making myself a better person, and making our world a better place for all of us to live and thrive.
Global StudiesBeing a global citizen involves having an open mind, the willingness to help others, and having the drive to educate others on the knowledge you have gained from being a global citizen. Right now, as a high school student, I am trying to educate myself on the environment and global health issues. Through out the school year I have been going to global studies events. The most recent event I went to was the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), NeverIsNow, conference in New York City. The ADL focuses on fighting anti-semitism across the globe. It was an amazing learning experience for myself because it opened my eyes to the ongoing crimes and hate towards the Jewish community in our nation. It was inspiring to see so many activist join together and fight for themselves and their ideals. I am not Jewish, but I found it necessary for myself to go to the NeverIsNow conference because the event helped me understand the struggles people in my community are going through. If anyone in this world wants to make a change, they first need to understand the problem itself. This is why I believe it is important for younger generations to educate themselves because we are next in line to make a change. Global studies has allowed me to realize that there is not enough time in this world to do nothing. The time is now, and the world needs kids that are ready to take a stand and fight for problems that not only our nations faces, but what the whole world faces.
University of ConnecticutCurrently, in the year 2022, I am attending the University of Connecticut (UConn) as a student in the Academic Center for Exploratory Students (ACES). Being undecided, I have had some time to pinpoint what major I want to explore, but I still have not decided. At the moment, I am interested in apply for the school of business at UConn. The plan for the summer is to figure out what major I want to apply for. All while working, learning, and growing, and preparing for my sophomore year of college.
